Summer break is almost here, and we are all making plans for a great summer full of excitement and fun.  Did you know that most families forget to include reading in their summer plans?  This lack of reading during the summer months creates what is called the “summer slide” – the learning loss that occurs over the summer.   Research has shown that due to the “summer slide” students scores will drop considerably on the same reading test taken in May and then taken again in August. Students often struggle in the classroom, trying to play catch-up, and the pattern repeats itself each summer.

Summer reading is the key to preventing the “summer slide”!!  Research shows that students who read at least four age appropriate books over the summer will score higher on reading test in the fall, than students who read little or none.

I would like to challenge our incoming 5th and 6th grade students to read at least four books this summer in the first ever CIS Reading Challenge! Here’s all you need to do:

When school begins on August 9th if you have 1000 points you will win lunch grilled out on the Big Green Egg!  Students with 600 points will win breakfast at McDonalds!
